Opened in time for the World Cup 2014 in Brazil and in readiness for the 2016 Olympics, JHP's stores for global duty free retailer Dufry in São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport are unlike any others in the world of Travel Retail.
Brasil is unique in that due to very high import taxes its arrivals stores generate far more revenue than those in departures. Arriving customers are allowed to spend up to US$1200 on anything from cases of Johnnie Walker to microwave ovens; and they do.
The result is that arrival stores are vast and of Hypermarket scale representing the ultimate meeting of luxury and commodity. Products are bought literally by the Trolley load with customers counting down their remaining spending power.
